The principles and goals of nature, environment, climate and sustainability education lead to a more conscious and sustainable approach to our nature and environment and thus also to better coexistence in our society. Likewise, the mission statement leads to an awareness of how important sufficiently available and high-quality urban nature is for human health and for the challenges of climate change in the city.

It is necessary to better protect, preserve and develop the valuable urban nature. The mission statement creates a basis for the people who create green places of learning and offer environmental education, helps to carry their values and content into society and supports the valuable cultural and social work for a shared future worth living in the city. Methods and processes are regularly updated on the basis of concrete evaluations and ensure the continuous development of the decentralized and inclusive quality assurance instruments.

Education for a green and sustainable Berlin is coordinated on a city-wide basis and acts decentrally based on the existing conditions or agreed-upon action priorities in the 12 Berlin districts.

The departments responsible at the various levels contribute their institutionally available competencies and resources constructively and self-responsibly to the various educational processes and activities.

The different roles of the district offices, the district coordination offices with their associated educational partners and the senate administrations are just as clearly defined as the corresponding areas of activity and responsibility. They are made comprehensible through transparent communication. Interdistrict service points support the development of needs-based services and the networking of the contributors involved.

By establishing continuous interdepartmental cooperation between the senate administrations, the state of Berlin ensures that educational work in the sense of this mission statement will continue in the medium and long term. In addition, it creates a reliable commitment for Berlin's educational actors by stabilizing the framework conditions and providing sufficient earmarked financial resources.

The state provides the districts with the resources they need and the districts distribute them further.
