1. What makes your district so special?
The district of Steglitz Zehlendorf is one of the greenest districts in Berlin. With the extensive Grunewald forest, many lakes, the Botanical Garden, museums and numerous other art and cultural institutions, the southwestern district is a popular recreational area for all Berliners. With Freie Universität and many other renowned non-university research institutions, the district is also considered a renowned science location. Another special feature of our district is that there are many green and extracurricular places of learning. Those are also known beyond the borders of the district and therefore frequently visited. Here, motivated, (full-time) professional or volunteer nature, environment and sustainability educators from very different contexts are involved. Some of these contributors are active in our NUN education advisory board. Together, we have set ourselves the goal of improving the quality and quantity of education in the district through better cooperation and networking. We jointly design an attractive educational landscape around the topics of sustainable development in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. We are very pleased that through intensive cooperation with politics and administration, a strong network has already emerged. This way, new synergies and projects are constantly emerging.
2. What green and sustainable places are there in our district?
There are quite a few: Lichterfeld Pasture Landscape, Düppel Museum Village, the Gardening School, two outdoor laboratories, Zehlendorf Forest School, the Botanical Garden with its museum, or Dahlem Domain, to name just a few. There also are many other places of learning such as Freie Universität Berlin with its Berlin-wide educational format of the "Schüler:innenUni Nachhaltigkeit + Klimaschutz", the interdisciplinary campus initiatives "Blühender Campus" and the sustainability initiative SUSTAIN IT!. Moreover, the districs offers many youth recreation/neighborhood institutions such as Sonnenhaus, Nachbarschaftshaus an der Wannseebahn, Haus der Jugend Zehlendorf. Also other institutions such as the Volkshochschule, Netzwerk Grüne Bibliotheken or Mittelhof e. V. are committed members of this diverse educational landscape. You can find more dedicated educational and learning locations on our district map: https://www.fu-berlin.de/sites/koordinierungsstelle-umweltbildung-steglitz-zehlendorf/03-Lehren-_-Lernen/02-Bildungslandschaft-Steglitz-Zehlendorf/index.html.
3. Which are the topics that we are most concerned with in the district?
As the NUN coordination office, we stand for exchange, cooperation and networking. With our work, we want to make the opportunities and challenges of nature, environment and sustainability education (NUN) more visible through public relations and lobbying. Moreover, we intend to increase the quality and quantity of educational offerings, but also contribute to improving the working conditions in the NUN education sector. Therefore, we develop and organize our own networking and educational formats for a wide variety of target groups. We bring people from different contexts to the same table, such as politics, administration, science and education. Central to our work is also the qualification of activists, multipliers and teachers in the district. Therefore, we offer tailored training formats, often in cooperation with other educational experts and institutions. In our activities, we are accompanied by a district NUN education advisory board. It now includes more than 20 active members from the district's education landscape.
